Problem

Young adults aren't moving enough.

Approximately 40% of college students do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity. And, it only gets worse as we age.

At this vulnerable stage when habits are forming, personal health and wellness are crucial to maintaining productivity. Yet, many are also at their busiest. Poor exercise habits, paired with demanding academic or professional schedules, put physical and mental health at risk. Without addressing these gaps, the consequences extend far beyond the self, indirectly affecting those around them through interactions and influence.

The Solution

When you have confidence, motivation, and access, you make time.

WillWork is a fitness app concept designed to help young adults stay consistent in health and fitness amidst their busy schedules. It brings together personalized workout programming, gamified progress tracking, and gym resource planning into one place.

Research

People are forced to spend even more time thinking than training.

To better understand obstacles around fitness, we conducted interviews with young adults of various occupations and gym experiences. We found struggle patterns in how they discover, stick to, and access fitness.

Loose Structures

Rookie gym-goers don’t know where to start. Participants reported relying heavily on social media for guidance, but they are unsure if it’s optimal for their health and goals.

Inconvenience → No Motivation

People are already busy enough. When fitness becomes inconvenient, they lose motivation – even when they know that it's for their health.

Inaccessibility

Equipment is hard to come by. As young adults have similar school/work schedules, gyms become full and inaccessible quickly.

Their key barriers to fitness are rooted in time. Without fitness knowledge and easy access, working out becomes a hassle. Even when they know that they should work out, it simply just isn't a priority.

how might we

How might we… help young adults spend less time figuring out fitness and more time actually doing it?

Early Explorations

We ideated a range of potential features, prioritizing ideas that would help reduce the time put into fitness.

From our brainstorm, 3 recurring features emerged that best addressed the pain points:

Walkthroughs

Simplified → navigable / personalized → EFFECTIVE

Simplified → navigable

personalized → beginner-friendly

By selecting muscle groups, WillWork creates a curated plan with tutorials to ensure a safe and effective workout. Planning a routine and learning optimal forms happens all in 1 place.

Gamification

Progress-Tracking → Motivation

Working out can be a boring game of patience. Gamifying fitness goals and progress helps working out become more fun and visual, thus appear attainable. With clear goals and achievements, users never leave a workout empty-handed.

Equipment Tracker

Know availability → less time waiting

Not everyone can afford waiting. Tracking equipment availability allows people to enter gyms confident that they can make use of it.

Final Designs

With our research insights, we ideated a range of potential features, prioritizing ideas that directly addressed the core barriers young adults face: time, motivation, and accessibility.
